Director of Model United Nations
Even at a time when almost everything stopped, Ioana did not – she started to develop a strong relationship with the UNA-YP in June 2020 while being the Advocacy & Outreach Officer at Edinburgh’s Model United Nations Society (EdMUN), and has been involved in the work of UNA-YP ever since. From establishing an online debate system to creating partnerships with various societies and even chairing software developers, she loves networking with a view to expand the scope and engagement of UN amongst fellow enthusiasts and beyond.
Having started her journey in the MUN world only 3 years ago, Ioana has been fascinated by the sense of community and the vastness of knowledge debaters acquire with every speech, which is why she wants to shape her role around training, mentoring, and cooperation among the societies in our national circuit. Nevertheless, Ioana believes it is important for people to be more aware of the workings of the United Nations beyond MUN, which is why she plans on developing educational programs that can help give young students an impactful voice in diplomacy.
Beyond UNA-YP, Ioana is a second-year Psychology and Linguistics student at the University of Edinburgh. Despite the seemingly unrelated nature of her degree, she finds joy in the (un)surprising links between these subjects and diplomacy. She also participated in numerous public speaking and leadership workshops, took part in journalistic competitions and has been a MUN debater since 2015.
Having grown up in Romania, she moved to the United Kingdom in 2016 – her journey through 2 educational systems and societies has inspired her to learn more about international relations, as well as to explore the roles language and multiculturalism play in our day and age.
Ioana’s vision of the UNA-YP can be summed up in 3 words: Growth, Cooperation, and Courage. She hopes that many young people like her will use the platform provided by the organization to gain knowledge, skills and confidence to speak up and change the world.
