About the Event

The UNA-YP UK recently hosted Dr. Christoph Heusgen, Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, for a discussion on the future of multilateralism.

Dr. Christoph Heusgen has been the Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations since July 2017 and has since 2019 been Germany’s representative on the Security Council.

Before to coming to New York, Ambassador Heusgen served for 12 years as Foreign and Security Policy Advisor to the Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel. His career in the Foreign Service also included terms as Deputy Head in charge of European Affairs in the private office of Foreign Minister Kinkel (1993-1997), and Director of the Policy Unit of the High Representative Javier Solana in the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union in Brussels (1999-2005).

Ambassador Heusgen attended the University of St. Gallen where he received his PhD in 1980 and then conducted post-doctoral research at Sorbonne University in Paris. He joined the German Foreign Office shortly thereafter and his first post was at the Consulate General in Chicago (1983-1986).

Event Report

  • Dr. Christoph Heusgen is the Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations and since 2019 has been Germany’s representative on the Security Council.
  • The ability to communicate is key to becoming a diplomat, however in terms of studies there is no need to specialise in Politics or International Relations (e.g. Economics and Health Sciences can be beneficial)
  • The work a diplomat for the United Nations does is significantly different as you are involved in maintaining relationships with more than just one other nation and are exposed to a variety of themes and situations
  • The members of the Security Council varies annually and represents each Regional Group 
  • The UN hopes to have a more efficient relationship with the US following the recent elections which saw Joe Biden become President
  • The matter regarding Chinese concentration camps is taken seriously by the UN, however it is important to remember that it is a powerful socialist country
